Celebrating Labor Day

PACT's Efforts in Supporting Conservation Careers in Belize

Belize observes Labor Day every year around the first of May. It’s an opportunity for the nation to recognize and honor the contributions of the working class, those who have helped shape and improve our country.

It goes without saying that for us at the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT), special recognition goes to the labor force within Belize’s conservation efforts. PACT recognizes the important role that these individuals play in achieving our vision of a sustainable and productive Belizean environment that Benefits all. PACT has been supporting conservation laborers in Belize for over two decades now, funding research, supporting protected areas co-managers, and engaging in various initiatives and partnerships.

Partnerships with conservation partners and community members are integral to PACT's work.

One such partnership with the University of Belize in the early 2000’s may have laid the groundwork for the active conservation sector that exists in Belize today. In 2006, PACT and University of Belize signed a memorandum of Understanding to support the establishment of the bachelor’s degree program in Natural Resource Management. The program aimed to train and equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to manage Belize’s protected areas effectively. Today the program has produced many graduates who have gone on to become leaders in their field and valuable contributors to Belize’s conservation efforts.

Included in this photo of PACT NRM scholarship recipients is Mr. Eli Romero, PACT Project Development Officer, and Dr. Kenrick Williams, current chairman of the board of directors.

These days, PACT invests in the operational expenses of Protected Areas Co-managers, which includes the salary for rangers, park managers, and other personnel. These individuals work tirelessly to ensure that our protected areas remain protected and that our natural resources are conserved for future generations. Their dedication and hard work often go unnoticed, but on this Labor Day, PACT wishes to acknowledge and thank them for their contributions.

At PACT, we believe that the conservation labor force in Belize deserves recognition and support, not just on Labor Day, but every day. Their hard work and dedication play a critical role in safeguarding Belize’s natural heritage and promoting sustainable development. As we celebrate Labor Day this year, let us remember the contributions of personnel in the conservation field and continue to support their efforts in protecting Belize’s precious natural resources.
