 MCCAP – Marine Conservation and Climate Adaptation

The Marine Conservation and Climate Change Adaptation Project (MCCAP) in the coastal areas of Belize is implemented by the Ministry of Forestry, Fisheries and Sustainable Development with fiduciary management assistance from the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) as the National Implementing Entity (NIE).  The objective of MCCAP is to implement a priority ecosystem-based marine conservation and climate adaptation measures to strengthen the climate resilience of the Belize Barrier Reef System and its productive marine resources.

KBA – Key Biodiversity Areas

The Government of Belize, with the assistance of the World Bank is implementing the project entitled ‘Management and Protection of Key Biodiversity Areas in Belize’ with funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) providing the Fiduciary Services.  Implementation of the Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) project will be over a five (5) year period.  The project development objective is to strengthen natural resource management and biodiversity conservation in Key biodiversity Areas (KBAs) of Belize.

    BIOFIN – Biodiversity Finance

    The Biodiveristy Finance Initiative (BIOFIN) is a global partnership launched in 2012 that is dedicated to address biodiversity financing challenges.  Belize is one of 30 countries that are currently involved in developing and piloting this project.  BIOFIN aims to develop a process for quantifying the biodiversity finance gap at national levels in order to improve cost-effectiveness and planning where biodiversity and national development are concerned.

    REDD+ – Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation

    The Government of Belize, in collaboration with the World Bank (WB) and with fiduciary management from PACT, is implementing the “REDD+ Readiness Project”. REDD+ is a global policy initiative that aims to address climate change threats by reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries. The objective of the REDD+ Readiness Project is to carry out Readiness Preparation through a participatory and inclusive process in order to strengthen Belize’s capacity to participate in future REDD+ carbon payment transactions. There are five (5) components of the project for which the development of a National Forest Reference Emission Level and a National Forest Monitoring and Safeguards Systems are included. Implementation of the REDD+ Readiness Project will be over a three (3) year period.

    Selva Maya – Natural Resources Protection Program

    The Selva Maya area covers approximately 42,300 km2 between Belize, Guatemala and Mexico, and is rich in a wide variety of natural and cultural resources. It has the largest extension of tropical forests in Mesoamerica; with approximately 4 million hectares of protected area decrees, housing species included in the IUCN Red List or national listings; and this area regulates ecosystem processes (hydrological, soil protection, among others) that are linked to productive processes (agriculture, tourism, etc.) of utmost importance to the regional economy. The interest in protecting Selva Maya is reflected in the laws and initiatives of the three countries. For protected areas to have the desired effect, it is necessary to strengthen the capacity of institutions, their representatives and implementers at the local level and the communities in the region. In addition, it is necessary to handle the pressure that comes from increasing population,migration and unsustainable land use.
