2013 RESEARCH GRANT
CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) was formally established in January 1996 with the passing of the Protected Areas Conservation Trust Act, No. 15 of 1995, creating the institution as a Statutory Board. The functions of PACT are to encourage and promote, for the benefit and enjoyment of the present and future generations of the people of Belize, the provision, protection, conservation and enhancement of the natural and cultural resources of Belize. The PACT is managed by a Board of Directors that is comprised of Government agencies, non-government organizations and individual experts.

Grant Description
In recognition of the importance of scientific inquiry to the advancement of Natural Resource Management and the implementation of the National Protected Areas Policy and System Plan, PACT provides funding to support eligible Belizean Post-graduate students, local researchers, and locally registered NGOs or government agencies actively involved in Protected Areas management or conservation to address gaps within the protected areas system.  These grants do not exceed BZ$20,000 and require a minimum of 25% counterpart funding and should range from 1-2 years in implementation.

Research Priorities 2013
PACT will be awarding one Research Grant during its 2013 fiscal year.  PACT is interested in having an OPEN CALL to accommodate new, innovative and unrestrictive thinking.  The following are some general guidelines:  
  • The research topic should be in accordance with national priorities outlined in the National Protected Areas Policy and System Plan and the National Research Agenda.  
  • The research should provide systematic or site level, marine or terrestrial, descriptive or functional information on ecosystems, biodiversity, habitats, species, sustainable community, industry, or policy development.
  • The research should result in tangible improvements in environmental policy and/or management of protected areas or natural resources.
  • The research and applicant must meet the eligibility requirements outlined in the application form.
