Progress in the Chiquibul Forest!
Launch of the Ceibo Chico Conservation Post

On July 4, 2012 the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) journeyed to Tapir Camp, Chiquibul National Park to attend the inauguration of the Ceibo Chico Conservation Post—joyfully inaugurated by the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Sustainable Development, Hon. Lisel Alamilla.

This Conservation Post is the third second to be enforced within the Chiquibul Forest, the other two being at Machaquila and Rio Blanco, and is one of the main outputs of PACT’s Large Grant ($300,000.00) to Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD). The main objective of the Large Grant is to advance enforcement within the Chiquibul Forest by extending monitoring and surveillance presence to the southern part of the forest. The Conservation Post will be operated by FCD with the support of the Belize Forest Department, the Police Department and the Belize Defense Force through a joint effort between the Ministry of Forestry, Fisheries and Sustainable Development; the Ministry of National Security and FCD.

PACT was formally established in January 1996 with the passing of the Protected Areas Conservation Trust Act, No. 15 of 1995, creating the institution as a Statutory Board. The functions of PACT are to encourage and promote, for the benefit and enjoyment of the present and future generations of the people of Belize, the provision, protection, conservation and enhancement of the natural and cultural resources of Belize. The PACT is managed by a Board of Directors that is comprised of Government agencies, non-government organizations and individual experts.
