The Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT)
Announces its
2011 RESEARCH GRANTS CALL FOR PROPOSALS


PACT was formally established in January 1996 with the passing of the Protected Areas Conservation Trust Act, No. 15 of 1995, creating the institution as a Statutory Board. The functions of PACT are to encourage and promote, for the benefit and enjoyment of the present and future generations of the people of Belize, the provision, protection, conservation and enhancement of the natural and cultural resources of Belize. The PACT is managed by a Board of Directors that is comprised of Government agencies, non-government organizations and individual experts.

Programme Description
In recognition of the importance of scientific inquiry to the advancement of Natural Resource Management and the implementation of the National Protected Areas Policy and System Plan, the PACT Research Grants funding window provides funding to support eligible Belizean Post-graduate students, local researchers, and locally registered NGOs or agencies actively involved in PA management or conservation to address gaps within the protected areas system.  These grants do not exceed BZ $20,000 and require a minimum of 25% counterpart funding and should range from 1-3 years in implementation.
 
Research Priorities 2011
Research related to the following priorities from the National Research Agenda is encouraged.

 
Terrestrial:
  • Comprehensive Assessment of land use changes and land cover
  • Modeling, vulnerability and adaptability of forest types and species to climate change impacts
  • Comprehensive Carbon stock assessments and market values
  • Impact Assessment of legal and illegal biological extraction practices (eg. Rosewood, Scarlet Macaws, Hicatee, etc.)
  • Riparian forest recovery patterns and its implications to water quality
Marine:
  • Comprehensive assessment of distribution and dynamics of commercial, endangered or invasive species. (Eg. Sea cucumbers, crabs, seaweed, Lion-fish, sea turtles, etc.)
  • Establish catch quotas and size limits for commercial fin-fish species
  • Cost-benefit analysis of tourism, oil and mineral extraction vs. ecosystem goods and services
  • Modeling, vulnerability and adaptability of ecosystems and species to climate change impact
